Connecting Essay 2

Connecting Essay

Bruce Davidson

In Davidson's image we can see a group of boys/men walking along what looks like pier, some of them have cigarettes in their mouth. The men are dressed like stereotypical 1950s boys with their trousers and shirts. Davidson has used natural lighting to photograph this image and has taken the image in black and white. The image being black and white takes away the focus of the colours in the image and makes us focus on what is actually going on in the picture. This image represents the different lives of people and the lives that regular people may not be comfortable or familiar with. We grasp that concept from this image as not many people are around them and it looks deserted where they are.

In the photograph that I took we can see a group of men sitting around, they are all sitting on different things such as barrels instead of chairs. The location they are in has graffiti on the walls and there are a few people around them. This photograph shows the modern urban life in London. It is slighting visible in the picture that the men were smoking because there is smoking coming out of one of the mens mouths. Each of the men are dressed differently showing that in modern times people don't necessarily dress the same, people learn to express themselves. This is also a location and vibe that regular people are not used to seeing because it seems lower class and many people are used to middle class situations.

These photographs are similar because they both show locations that regular people of the time are not used to seeing. I got the idea of my photo from Davidson's work because although these men are not part of a gang, they are part of a community that regular people may not be comfortable with which is similar to the 1950s gang. I didn't edit my photo in black and white because I still wanted the colours to come through but I wanted a dull vibe because it adds to the effect of the image.
