Connecting Essay 3

Connecting Essay

Marcel Kolacek

In Kolacek's photo we can see a woman doing her laundry in a bucket. We can tell that this woman is from a poorer country because of the shack behind her and the fact that she isn't doing her laundry in a washing machine like regular people. Although we associate this woman with living a hard life, she is still smiling, this suggests to us that she may have experienced worse things in her life so doing her laundry in a buckets is the least of her worries. As well as documenting the hard lives of people this photo also shows the stereotype of women, even the women in poorer countries are stereotyped with doing the laundry and looking after the family.

In my photo we can see a woman hanging her washing out on the washing line. When we look at this image we think of the stereotypical life of women because we associate women with hanging out the washing. This image gives a depressing effect because of the black and white effect, however, the woman doesn't look that depressed to be hanging out the washing which shows that she is used to it. I think this image shows the stereotype of a woman well because women are thought to look after their family which is represented in this image as she is doing the washing for her family.

These photographs are similar because they both show women looking after their families and show the stereotype of women. I got my idea from Kolacek's work because although Kolacek documents peoples hard lives this image also portrays the stereotype of a woman. The fact that I also edited my image in black and white like he did shows that it links to this image even more. My image could link to the hard lives of people because although the women doesn't look like she's depressed hanging out washing cannot be enjoyable.
