Connecting Essay 5

Barbara Kruger

In Barbara Kruger's image we can see a little boy flexing his muscles and a girl pointing to them. His face looks angry and determined as if he is proud of his muscles. Her face looks shocked as if she is amazed by what he is showing her. The caption on this image says "we don't need another hero" this relates to the picture because he is trying to be strong and powerful like a hero. These hero's are always displayed as men so the fact that it says we don't need another one shows how sick people are with men becoming strong and powerful.

In my image we can see a boy in boxing wear jabbing at the camera. In the image the boy looks very intimidating and almost looks scary as his eyes are wide and look aggressive. The fact that he is jabbing at the camera shows that he is trying to be frightening and look powerful. We associate boxers with being fierce and angry so the way this boy is standing fits in with this stereotype well.

These two pictures link because they both show boys trying to show off and trying to look powerful and strong. Both of these images show the stereotype of boys who inspire to be someone powerful and dominant. Although my image doesn't have a caption like Kruger's it still displays the same effect. We project strong feelings towards both of these images, Kruger's makes us thing about the children who are going to grow up wanting to be like the so called 'hero's' today and my image makes us fear what this boy will turn out like and feel intimidated by him.
